Jason W. Baas

Jason Baas focuses his practice on civil litigation, particularly all areas of insurance defense and coverage, defense of self-insured governmental entities and commercial disputes. He has shown a particular expertise in trying medically complex cases with high exposure damages. He was lead counsel in a 2017 Wayne County PIP trial that lasted over 7 days and involved 23 witnesses including 12 medical experts. He is active in several bar associations and industry groups, and has contributed to Michigan Lawyers Weekly on insurance law topics and presents at the Insurance Institute of Michigan’s annual seminar related to fraud and trial tactics that have helped him achieve stellar results for his clients.


Recent Representative Trial Matters

First-party No-Fault Trial – Wayne County Circuit Court (July 2017)

Lead counsel in obtaining a No Cause of Action verdict over 7 days of trial in Wayne County Circuit Court. In that trial, Plaintiff claimed over $900,000.00 in PIP benefits after undergoing 3 spinal fusions and a shoulder surgery. After approximately 30 minutes of deliberations, the jury returned a No Cause verdict. As of March 2018, Mr. Baas has returned over $10,000.00 to his client from trial costs assessed against one of the losing parties, a well-known medical provider.

Third-party No-Fault Trial – Wayne County Circuit Court (March 2016)

Obtained a No Cause of Action verdict over 4 days of trial in Wayne County Circuit Court. During that trial, Plaintiff claimed that the Defendant driver was negligent resulting in injuries to her back. Plaintiff had an SI joint fusion procedure that her physicians attempted to relate to the accident while also claiming disability from future work. Plaintiff’s counsel demanded $2,500,000.00 at trial. The jury returned a No Cause verdict. Following the verdict, a Judgment was entered against Plaintiff for Case Evaluation Sanctions after which Mr. Baas was able to garnish a subsequent lawsuit settlement she received and has returned over $30,000.00 to his client.

First-party No-Fault Trial – Wayne County Circuit Court (January 2012)

Obtained a No Cause of Action verdict over 3 days of trial in Wayne County Circuit Court. Plaintiff claimed approximately $100,000.00 in PIP benefits.
